In June 2015, the FDA approved a new medication called Mepolizumab for
the treatment of severe eosinophilic asthma in patients 18 years or
older. This is an exciting advancement in the treatment of asthma for
those patients who are on high doses of inhaled steroids and continue to
have regular exacerbations, frequent visits to emergency rooms or
hospitalizations or are dependent on steroids such as prednisone. This
new medication has been shown to reduce rates of hospitalizations or ER
visits and also reduce rates of asthma exacerbation. Dr. Kim feels that
Mepolizumab will be a potent medication to help control severe asthma.
Ask the doctors at Sunshine Allergy about your medications if your
asthma is difficult to control.
